I've had my eye on these Pliner Monk Straps for several months, hoping Amazon would drop the price, and they came through again. Not the outrageous bargains of some previous Pliners, but low enough to activate my one-click finger. Once you try these, those fifty dollar Hush Puppies and all the other shoes made in the Asia just don't cut it anymore. This is my 5th pair, and it would be six if I hadn't trusted Amazon's collection of another Pliner shoe not to run out of my size. Pliners fit true to size (only one exception), are instantly comfortable, and don't give you cause to have second thoughts several hours after putting on the shoe.

They come with a light but durable felt travel/storage bag, a cool outsized shoehorn, and of course the designer label stamped inside the shoe: "Donald J. Pliner, Made in the Mountains of Northern Italy." It would hardly be an ascetic monk who would wear these Monk Straps; on the other hand, everyone's entitled to some personal indulgences. (Italy is now making a grand piano--the Fazioli--that not only outclasses Japanese models but is a threat to Steinway and Bosendorfer.)

Qualifiers: The pointed toes are probably more radical than they appear in the picture, adding almost an extra inch to the total length of the shoe. I wouldn't wear them with tight or high pants cuffs, nor would it I recommend them in a light color. Also, don't make the mistake of putting them on before removing the black plastic supportive inserts (from personal experience). The cosmetic toes and essentially non-functional buckle aside, the shoes are comfortable from the get go and, while likely to be noticed, should not call undue attention to the wearer providing pants cuffs fall as mentioned above. They're shoes that feel good and that you can feel good about.

[Whoops. The price went back up--probably because consumers like me demonstrated there was a demand for these puppies. It's still a 33% mark-down--a bit rich for my feet, but yours may be more deserving.]
